March 3rd, is world book day. The occasion transpires on the first Thursday of March in Ireland and the United Kingdom. World Book Day was introduced on April 23rd, 1995, by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The year 2022 marks the 25th anniversary of world book day. The annual celebration strives to nurture a passion for reading books and to embrace the joy of reading for children and young adults. This year’s theme is ‘you are a reader’. Children are encouraged to dress as their favorite storybook character to help them engage with literary figures.
In honor of world book day highlighted below is a list of charities that provide books and promote literature.
Books For Africa gathers, sorts, and ships books, computers, tablets, and library enrichment materials to every country in Africa in association with worldwide contributors, publishers, and African partners.
First Book believes that education is the best method to outpace poverty for children in need. The program donates books and other resources to classrooms and libraries serving unprivileged children, from birth to age 18, to eliminate barriers to quality instruction for all kids.
Kids Need To Read was founded by a combined passion to enrich the lives of disadvantaged children by furnishing inspiring book collections and exciting literacy programs to underfunded schools, libraries, and organizations across the nation. The foundation aspires to empower and embolden every child through a community of reading.
Page Ahead Children’s Literacy Program
Guided by the knowledge that literacy is fundamental to lifelong success, Page Ahead provides new books and develops reading adventures that empower at-risk children. Founded in 1990, Page Ahead Children’s Literacy Program has given more than 3.5 million new books to more than 950,000 children through partnerships with schools, social service agencies, preschools, and early childhood programs across Washington state.
Page Ahead has evolved from a King County book giveaway project to the leading provider of children’s books and literacy services in the state, presently attending to more than 17,000 students in eighteen counties, and a top-ranked early childhood education program nationwide on Charity Navigator.
The Book Bus Since 2008, The Book Bus has labored to strengthen literacy in Zambia, Malawi, and Ecuador, providing books, storytelling materials, and libraries for children and educators.
The Pajama Program gifts sleepwear and a bedtime book to children, with a considerable portion of contributions going to children who have been, or are waiting to be adopted.
Project Night Night provides “sweet dreams for homeless children.” The organization bestows over 30,000 night night packages each year to homeless children 12 and under who need these essentials to create a sense of security. Each bundle contains a security blanket, a new (age-appropriate) book, and a stuffed animal nestled together inside a brand new tote bag. By providing these offerings Project Night Night lessens trauma and enhances emotional stability in the children they serve.
