I became interested in learning more about author Aspen Matis when I discovered that she hiked the Pacific Crest Trail to reconstruct her painful history.

Synopsis

From Aspin Matis, author of the acclaimed true story Author In The Woods, comes a bold and atmospheric memoir of a woman who-in searching for her husband-discovers deeper purpose.

Aspen’s and Justin’s paths serendipitously aligned on the Pacific Crest Trail when both were walking from Mexico to Canada separately and alone-both using hiking to escape their pasts. Both sought to redefine themselves beneath the stars. By the time they made it to the snowy Cascade Range of British Columbia-the trail’s end-Aspin and Justin were in love.

My Review

I truly enjoyed reading Aspen Matis’ introspective, courageously penned literary novel.

Your Blue Is Not My Blue is an incredible story based on Aspen Matis’ true-life experiences. While trekking the Pacific Crest Trail Aspen meets Justin who rescues her from the onset of hypothermia. Aspen and Justin, are complex, yet relatable characters. Traveling separately, the hikers unite, fall in love and then marry a year later. Together they indulge in idyllic, exotic adventures invoking nature’s splendor.

Justin enables his wife enrolling her in writing courses and subsequently relocating with Aspen to New York. Living in New York, Aspen pursues her dream of crafting her first book. Alternatively, Justin is lost without access to the outdoors. The couple’s world begins to collide as cracks in their marriage come to the surface.

Depressed Male

Consequently, Justin becomes frustrated during an argument with Aspen as he sheds light on their differences telling her that

your blue is not my blue.

He enlightens Aspen with his belief that two people can look at the same image, but can still maintain contrasting points of view. Shortly thereafter, Justin leaves the city to attend the funeral of a hiking companion. Following the memorial, Justin does not return home.

Aspen misses Justin spiraling downward without him. Haunted by Justin’s absence Aspen slowly gains the courage to strive for a new beginning.

Your Blue Is Not My Blue is Aspen Matis’ 21st-century account of how she treads along several different paths before coming home to recognize her strengths.
